Dear all, this will be a short one. Maybe Knowing me, probably not!
I recently passed the halfway mark in fundraising for AIDS/Lifecycle 10, the 7 day, 560 mile San Francisco to Los Angeles bike ride running June 5th 11th, 2011. For more information on the ALC event, including the route, upcoming events, and other ways to help, click here.
Now, as you may already know, my special guarantee is still in effect. For every $1,000 I raise over the $3,000 minimum, I will ride the infamous Quadbuster climb an additional time. So for those of you out there that would love to see me in a little (or a lot) of pain, heres your chance! I would love to have to ride it 4-5 times, and with your help, that can become reality!
Now, here is where you come in.
First, and most importantly, donations. Millions of folks out there, gay and straight, male and female, are living with AIDS, and many of them depend on places like the San Francisco AIDS Foundation for survival. This is the Foundation I have chosen to benefit from my fundraising efforts. Any and every donation will go a long way. I have received donations ranging from $10 to $250. The amount is not what is important, its the effort to do what you can to help. Any amount will make a difference, more then you may think. Read the story at the bottom of this email on that subject
Donating is simple. Just go to my personal fundraising homepage, and click the link there that says Donate to support Erik. It should be right under my picture. That will bring you to ALCs secure donation page, where you can make a safe, tax deductible donation. Its that easy! Start by clicking here!
Second, outreach. I would love to reach more folks then my mailbox and Facebook are limited to. So, if you could so kind as to forward this to anyone you know that may be interested, I would greatly appreciate it. The more people I can reach, the more money we can put together to help those in need.
I know the economy is not in great shape right now, which is why I would rather broaden my fundraising base then ask the same folks for money over and over again. So, if you forward this email, you can help make that difference. Thank you so much ahead of time!
Thirdly. (Thirdly? Is that even a word?) I am exploring a few other ideas to raise money, one of them might be a dine-in at a local restaurant. That is still very much in the idea/planning stage, but stay tuned for more information regarding that. And if you have other ideas, things you may have done to raise money, please let me know. Im open to try anything!
Lastly, if you are interested in following me on the ride, I suggest looking me up on Facebook and adding me as a friend. (Just search by my name, Erik Dabel, or by this email address) I update quite a bit from the ride, and you can also stay up to date on fundraising efforts and training rides.
Thank you all so much ahead of time. I cannot express in words how much it means to me to have your help and support. And again, please forward this to as many folks as you can. Thanks!

Now for story time. This is a story we heard at dinner time news on the ride the last couple of years. It was told by one of the directors of the ride, who at the time was helping out at one of the rest stops. I will try to get it as close to accurate as I can. Here you go:
Several years ago, working on a rest stop, the crew was posted next to a large agriculture ranch. They could see farm workers out in the distance, working the fields. The farm workers watched as the ALC folks set up, and continued watching as nearly 3,000 cyclists throughout the day came in and out of the rest stop. At one point, one of the workers got in her car and drove slowly through the field and up to the rest stop. She walked in, and asked what was going on. They explained that it was a fundraiser for AIDS, that they were riding from San Fran to LA over 7 days, and that they had raised nearly $10 Million for the effort. The lady paused, said thank you, and got in her car and left.
They kept working, at that time they had gotten pretty busy so they were not paying attention to the field workers. But low and behold, here comes the car again, across the fields, and up to the rest stop. The same woman got out, walked up to the rest stop crew, and said, Its not much, but we got together and would like to make a donation to your cause. And she handed over a couple dollars in loose change. Everyone at the rest stop stopped what they were doing to thank her, many with tears in their eyes.
To this day, she says, that is the most meaningful, important donation she has ever received. And I believe her.
