Well, my summer just got shorter. Looks like some of those long bike rides I had planned might have to wait. The centuries, might not happen at all now.
Originally, with both symphonies off for some time and all my lessons on Mondays and Tuesdays, I had so much time it was crazy. Well, that all changed.
Some things didn't change, they just came, like the summer set for one symphony, which is ending today with our summer pops concert. Beethoven #6, Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man for brass and percussion, some piano concerto, and an encore of John Williams' Indiana Jones March is on the bill for tonight.
Next week, I have the summer concert with my trombone ensemble, in which I am a featured soloist, performing Bone Dances for Bob, a pretty cool piece for trombone solo with trombone choir. That's next Friday. Can't wait, it's a cool solo, and great set, and a lot of fun to play. Good stuff. I just hope I have the chops for that one.... a long trill on a double Eb, lot's of double F's, and my own addition of a double (triple?) Bb at the very end. Sweet.
Now for the new. I just signed on to do Bernstein's West Side Story with CMT of San Jose. Wow, such great music. However, that also means my summer is officially over. Not bad, I love the music, it pays decent, and I'm having fun. So, all good. And, seriously, fucking West Side Story. I'm not a huge musical fan, but that one is something else. Awesome.
And that will lead me right into, with a one week break, band camp at the high school. And then it's the fall crazy season. Staff for the marching band, lessons crammed wherever they can fit, and rehearsals 3-4 nights per week.
Busy season, here I come! Be nice please!

That kitty in my last blog is FOUR years old! He's just a little sausage cat -- never got very big but he's kind of chunky and muscular. I'm still waiting for the "little terror" phase to wear off.
I'm headed into my own sets of rehearsals soon, too. I've been the music director for Classic Greek Theatre of Oregon off and on for the past six years or so and, once again, I've acquiesced and said I'd do it. I've been pleading for the score for nearly two weeks (read throughs begin on the 28th) and so far nobody has coughed it up. Yeah...... it's gonna be one of THOSE kinds of shows, I'm afraid. *sigh*
Have fun with all the music and get those rides in when you can. I just saw "back to school" ads on TV and it was a sad reminder that summer is practically halfway gone! Say it isn't so!
