The music from Star Wars? Nightmare Before Christmas? This upcoming concert will be fun. Quite.
I've never played this type of family concert before. Hell, I haven't even done many pops concerts. And the extent of that material is still from the regular "classical" genre. Or juggernaut. Either way...
This one is different. The music from Star Wars? Nightmare Before Christmas? A narrated piece with words by Lemony Snicket? We are doing In The Hall of the Mountain King, so at least there will be some semblance of sanity....
But, this is still not what I was expecting. I love the music from Nightmare, it simply amazes me every time I take a listen. And Star Wars? Please.... If I could narrow my love of music, classically leaning, to one piece? That's it. I remember as a kid listening to it over and over, amazed by what my ears where absorbing.
As for playing it, though? I can't help but continue to get goosebumps at certain spots. And at others I simply bust out laughing. Not at the absurdity of it all, or even the abstract silliness, but at the sheer awesomeness of the whole thing. The night we sight read Star Wars, the entire low brass section would repeat the same process. Play a section, finish that section, look and stare at each other in disbelief that we are doing this - thing - and then laugh a little like the 3rd grader that just discovered porn. Even to this day, weeks after sight reading through it, we still get through sections and take turns with the fist pumps, metal fingers, and even some returning uncontrollable giggling. It's just silly. Awesome as all shit, but still silly.
I'm fucking playing Star Wars. If I was told when I was 10 years old that when I was 30, I would be playing the music from Star Wars in a semi-pro orchestra, I would fall over laughing.
But here I am. Can't wait till Saturday!
