P: Publius, after the pen name used by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. Now known as The Federalist, or the Federalist Papers, these were letters to newspapers, in support of the Constitution, which was not actually in effect at the Founding. Required reading for all Americans, and anyone interested in how American government works.
A: Marcus Aemilius Scarus. As Priceps Senatus, or leader of the house, he was able to control the more radical visions of Gauis Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix until his death. Soon after, the Republic fell.
Scipio. I am always amused when people talk about Hannibal Braca as a great general. No. Competent, maybe good, but not great. Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus took Hannibal's main ally, Syracuse, and then invaded Africa, and besieged Carthage. Hannibal had several fatal flaws as a general, whereas Scipio had none. After decisively defeating Hannibal and sacking Carthage, Gnaeus, proceeded to kick Hannibal's ass all around the Mediterranean.
