TRIGGER WARNING.
So, this is addressed towards feminists (and anyone else who has opinions on this topic!). And please nobody get upset with me! I am not the type to challenge anyone's opinion, I just want to open up discussion and share opinions. I have been studying performance art in school, and a lot of people on my course are feminists. I have never considered myself a feminist, but I am sure as hell not sexist either. I don't like to call myself a feminist because I believe in gender equality. I know many people believe that the word feminism refers to gender equality, but in my opinion the word itself goes against that belief. It is slanted towards females. I also am aware that women have faced a lot more oppression in the past (and less currently, but I do know it still exists), but I still do not like to identify as a feminist.
So, basically, I have nothing against feminism, I just do not believe I am one. I in fact, am very curious about feminism. I don't want to challenge anyone's beliefs, but mine go against some feminist beliefs. So once again, I am just wanting to open discussion. So expect there to be quite a few questions coming through on my blog. But I will do one topic at a time to avoid confusion
So, the topic on my mind at the moment is associated with rape. (I IN NO WAY CONDONE RAPE. I have not been raped but have had a lot of issues with consent, and have friends who have been raped. I recognize it as a disgusting act that should not exist. but unfortunately, it does). And that's just the thing. There have been issues surrounding girls being told that if they did certain things, it could prevent rape. This has been described as "Teaching women not to get raped as opposed to teaching men not to rape." SO, my opinion on this topic is as such: I believe it is not the woman's fault if she is wearing certain clothing (eg short skirt, showing a lot of skin) or walking alone at night. I wish that it were completely safe for women to do so. But unfortunately, there are still men out there who like to rape, and will do so. I do believe society has done it's best to teach that rape is wrong, but unfortunately it is impossible to correct everyone. While it is true that a lot of these men will rape despite what the girl is wearing or where she is, everyone is different. Therefore, is it not possible that certain rapists will be triggered by seeing more skin on a woman? It is in no way the girls fault, but I believe that people advance with this violent act for all sorts of reasons. Certain triggers may exist. And while it is in no way the girls fault, it may happen.
I hope i have articulated clearly, words are not always my strong point!
So please, share your opinions. I only want to learn about your point of view. And I cannot stress enough that I don't want to argue or upset anyone with this. I am not challenging anyone, and I am not a victim blamer!
Peace and love to everyone.
