Four years ago this week I suffered the worst beating of my life at the hands of my supposed friends. So there we were it was a pit party out in the middle of nowhere. Just me and a bunch of skinheads! Yeah, you can see where this is going. I never use to care whether or not someone had such an extreme belief I figured hell we all have quirks. I had hung out with these guys numerous times before and I never had a problem. Nothing ever happened to me and I was never an accessory to a hate crime. So Anyway I was at this party having a decent time drinking beers and jager. We're messing around like guys do. When one guy turns to me and starts swinging. I didn't really realize it all at once because I was fucked up and all I could see were these shadows moving back and forth from my face. I thought they looked strange how them seemed to hover, and for some reason they wouldn't let me move forward. Then my nose broke for the fifth time, and I realized I was in some shit. I subdues the guy and pushed my thumb into his eye ball until he started screaming! That's really where it started. It just came from everywhere. Blow after blow found my head, I don't think there ever was a body shot, but man all I remember was the strange calm and cold feeling, and the sight of my blood everywhere. It could have been an hour it could've been five minutes but it lasted forever to me. I never made a sound, and I never went down, but I remember thinking this is it! You're dead! This is all from shock, the only thing holding me up is the shock. Then all at once they left. And in a dream like state I walked back to my car and drove home. I looked in the mirror and it didn't look too bad, just some swelling. Anyway I got in the shower cleaned off the blood and straightened my nose. I went to bed thinking I have to go to work after this. When I woke up the next day. I went into the bathroom to get ready for work. My face was purple! distorted! It didn't even look like me. The top of my head looked like a mushroom, or like I had protruding horns or something. Anyway I called out of work and went to the hospital. The triage nurse looked at me and asked what happened. When I told him my story he said he's never seen anyone beaten so severely by another person or persons using there bare hands. He thought a bat or club for sure. He then went into this speech about how sick these people must have been, and that the fact I could walk in there was a miracle. So they did x-rays, cat scan, everything they do for head trauma. In the end I had a broken nose, contusions to my left orbital bone, and a concussion. They gave me some thing to clear the blood out of my nose and throat, and then some pain pills. I filled the prescription and went to sleep.
It took 8 weeks for my face to heal, and two more years for the scar tissue to shrink away.
I've never been a big fan of doctors so I never scheduled a follow-up appointment. This year I went. To explain the myriad of problems I've been having.
My left arm doesn't move so well. It moves but it's slower, something I've only been able to notice.
I can no longer breath through my nose. As my left nostril is almost completely closed.
I stutter. I've never stuttered before in my life, but I started to after the fight.
I have a hard time finishing my thoughts. If I'm speaking out loud I might stop speaking in the middle of a sentence and take a long pause before I can finish saying what I was thinking.
These are all linked to severe skull trauma.
Why don't I ever take care of myself until it's too late?
Wow! Well that was a bummer... So who wants to watch Season 2 of Degrassi?!
