What the fuck is going on in Greece?!
Okay I've been a little out of the loop, what with the holidays, my birthday and goings on close to home the news and world events have been left to unfold without me. Today however I chose to get back in the loop and I caught a small blurb about insurrection in Greece on BBC World News.
So I did some checking and it turns out that on December 6th, two days after my birthday, their was an incident in the art district of Athens where Police brutality has led to over two weeks of rioting that could very well topple the Government.
It goes like like this. Exarcheia, which is an artsy district in Athens, the type of place where there's museums, theaters, clubs, and places to go to concerts, some Police were out to pick a fight. Two cops who were on patrol of nearby public grounds, looking for things like littering and trespassing. Decided to leave their post, travel a few blocks over where they happened upon some some kids, and decided to pick a fight. At first the Police claimed that the kids incited what happened but several eye-witness accounts say that the police incited a verbal altercation with the youths which led to one of the officers to draw his weapon and fire. Forensic reports are still not in at this time so it's is not known for certain how the following occurred but 15 year old Alexandros Grigoropoulos was fatally shot. The Police officer in question claims it was an accident that the boy died as a result of a ricochet from three warning shots fired into the air.
How crazy is this shit.
Thousands of young people have taken to the streets in protest leading to rioting on numerous occasions and throwing the country in near revolt. The situation is so severe as the country has pretty much come to a halt. The protesters cite the shooting as the straw that broke the camels back as it is one more social injustice the Greek people face what with the dire economic crisis the rising unemployment rate and government corruption. Rioting and demonstrations starting December 6th are still at present going on in several Greek cities, with Greek consulates being protested and defaced around the world.
When I was younger my friend Nikki, who is Greek, told me about what it was like to grow up there specifically talking about police violence and instances where they commit acts of rape against women. That was 1994 it's interesting to see how things don't very much over there.
What with a world recession going on, and possibly a depression on the rise, can a world war be very far off? This is not some third world nation where poverty and social strife are day to day occurrences, this is Greece, one of the richest and largest countries in Europe. Not to mention a major player in the European Union.
It's a scary time to be alive, and there's nothing worse than feeling helpless as the whole world loses control.
Christmas time is here but every year it feels less and less like it. How long will it be before Christmas is just another day?
