I recently had the pleasure of seeing both Gorgeous Frankenstein and Michale Graves about a week apart so I decided it's time to RUMBLE!!!! It's the battle of the Exfits, who will survive and what will be left of them!!!
Up first: Gorgeous Frankenstein w/ Bella Morte, Carbomb, The Zombie Mafia, and NoN/Sense September 5th at the New Alahambra in Philly
To be fair we didn't go to see Gorgeous Frankenstein we went to support Bella Morte who's eighth record Beautiful Death will be out next month. We hung around with Andy Deane for most of the night. And I even posed the question as to why is the band with eight records opening for the band with one record, and Andy explained that the tour was basically a bust GF really didn't draw any fans. We didn't watch the first two bands because well we didn't care, and they're music didn't do anything to grab us.
Carbomb, however were really good. I hadn't heard of them before this show but apparently they're a mathcore band, and are always changing tempo and breaking down songs in the middle. It had a very chill vibe to it. Which is weird because it was loud with growling vocals, but it really made me want to sit down throw a dinner party and talk about politics and art. So I bought the cd. Check them out if you get time.
Up next was Bella Morte. The band we came to see. With an entirely new set! Will wonders never cease? Granted I've seen this band alot and I really had their old set down, minus a couple of songs, but now they play alot of new material and are pushing to make the band a bigger success. They rocked but we knew they would, and I really like the stuff off the new record and I can't wait to get a copy.
Finally after a forty minute set change, now mind you their is a strict curfew in Philly and we have to vacate the building at twelve, which by the time they set up Doyle's eight speaker cabinets theirs about 40 minutes left to play. So they come out and play some of their originals which while they sound better with the addition of Arthur Goolsby of Blitzkid on vocals they still aren't that good. Then they jump into some Misfits tunes. Goolsby does a great rendition of Resurrect and then muddles his way through Dig Up Her Bones and the Shining. He was really the one thing that stood out about their performance, he was wild onstage and great base player, but he couldn't cover the rest of the band. Doyle is a good guitar player but not much of a performer he walks back and forth and that's about it. Dr. Chud, who cares anyone could play drums for this band, but the worst was the stage performance by Doyle's wife former WCW wrestling valet Gorgeous George. Ten years ago she was the hottest girl in wrestling, now she's a frumpy wannabe in green and black striped spandex. There was a stripper pole onstage for her but she did no tricks with it? So why have it? She was just bad pandering to the audience and touching herself. Their performance wasn't great but it wasn't at all memorable. I was more upset that they never came out to interact with the crowd. There was maybe 100 people there and they need to build a fan base, so get out there and meet your fans!!! Can the rock star bullshit cause that time has come and gone now you need to start over.

Gorgeous Frankenstein
Up next: Michale Graves w/ Divinity Destroyed, Johnny B. Morbid, and The Zombie Mafia September 13th at the Bellmar Fire hall.
So now on the other side of the bridge Michale Graves kicked off a new acoustic Tour supporting the West Memphis Three and a new record of his own out next month.
We missed the Zombie Mafia, and thank god cause I didn't want to see that again.
We caught Johnny B. Morbid who played forever!!! You know those bands that are bad and it only feels like forever? Well this was different they were actually pretty good but they just played forever!!! It was like two hours! Graves didn't play that long!!! But this band had like ten members and did some wild covers including Party All the Time! Yes the Eddie Murphy song! SO that was something to watch but after two hours it got old.
Up next Divinity Destroyed acoustic, a band that will not be pigeonholed. Who really can't describe their own music, but I highly advise checking them out, you really have to experience them for yourself. They did a VNV cover and I laughed so hard that they questioned me from stage. I was thinking VNV Nation at a punk show. But they we're really cool.
Finally Michale Graves sat down for an all acoustic set. He was mesmerizing! He sat alone and with his guitar and just played a number of songs from his career. The crowd was really into it and sang softly behind him for most of the set. It provided a neat foundation on which he was able to improvise on top of. He did Ophelia which is my favorite Graves tune, and in between he joked and told stories, it was a really cool experience and he didn't hide behind the makeup, this was intimate just a guy and his guitar singing his heart out and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen.
So Graves wins.
*In other news it looks like a career change is quickly coming upon us, I will keep you all posted and hopefully have an announcement soon.*
I'm also being thoroughly entertained by the upcoming election not to mention world events. One in particular.
Hugo Chavez President of Venezuela has thrown the US out of his country. Venezuela is a major oil supplier to the US and the only oil supplier to offer relief for Katrina victims, and the impoverished people of this country. Chavez gave the US ambassador 72 hours to get out of his country. Then wisely fearing for his life as if the US would stage a coup, which they already tried in 2002 invited the Russian air force to park their planes in his country.
Who's ready for WWIII? It could still all end in a volley of nuclear missiles and a big flash of light... but before that I really want to go to Joe's Crab Shack.
