For the longest time, I've always wanted to research my genealogy and figure out where exactly I came from. I find it absolutely fascinating. Ancestry.com always has commercials playing constantly so I decided what the hell!
There were like three monthly options I could choose from. One was just searching in the US, another was worldwide, and to be honest I forgot the third. So I have the middle option a try because I knew it wouldn't take me long to find things out of the United States.
I'm glad I did that because I was so right!
It didn't take me long on my dads side. My 4th great grandparents came from France and Mexico! I knew I had some French in me but I was surprised to see Mexico. My dad honestly looks very Cuban so it was really neat to see that we are actually Mexican.
My moms side, however, I was more interested in. My grandfather would never admit to being either Spanish or Italian so my mom had no idea what she was. So I started digging into his side. Like my dads side, it didn't take me too long to find it. My 3rd great grandparents were.... wait for it....Portuguese! I was pretty surprised! I want to do some more digging and see if there's a reason they stopped saying they were Portuguese. Has to be some gossip in there some where.
The actual research was a lot of fun for me. They show actual documents, like the census, military draft papers, immigration papers (although it seems my family might have been illegals because I can't find any immigration paperwork), etc.
has anyone else ever done this? Whether it was ancestry or through another source? were your results surprising?
I really would love to know!
