So I finally came up with a unifying theme for my Warhammer 40k armies (Do you know how hard it is to unify Chaos when your name isn't Abbadon?). It's a little cheesey, but I don't care, it's pure fun and I'm going to run with it. I am still working out the details on some of the lesser worlds. You may quickly recognize some of the parallels to Earth histories.
Name: Confederate Space Alliance (CSA)
Location: In a trans-ethereal fold of space along the edge the Eye of Terror, between the Cadian Gate and Balanor
Motto: quattuor deos, nostrum vindices (four gods, our vindicators)
Colors: Grey, Scarlet, Navy
Description: A loose confederation of thirteen worlds, united more by their mutual hatred of the imperium than concern for each other. Largely concerned with defense from imperial aggression, the Confederate forces rarely venture out of free areas, however several pyrrhic and costly attacks have been orchestrated deep within the Segmentum Solar. These intrusions into Terran space, although brilliant creations of the military mastermind Robertum E'lee'o, were ultimately doomed to fail because of inherent communication breakdowns and desire for personal glory within the individualistic ranks of confederate warbands.
The non-aligned human homeworld Caeleste Vrgines is the most powerful of the thirteen and generally serves as a capital. Located closest to imperium space, it is under a constant state of imperial occupation and assault, and serves as the major battleground for military activity in the region.
Other worlds of note include:
Floridanna: This former Eldar craftworld now serves as a Slaaneshi shrine-world, home to both human cults and daemons. A virtually endless paradise, Floridanna is known most for the vast beaches of cocaine and methamphetamines and is rumored to have an ancient fountain that produces a psychoactive serum so powerful that it will heal any wound based solely on faith, and in large doses may grant the drinker immortality or other beneficial mutations (or spawnhood as the dark prince sees fit). Plague zombies from Nurgle York often make their way to Floridanna to live out their final days burning in the bright sunlight while suffering the indignity of trying to make it to the bathroom on time.
Cackalackey III and IV: Two natural planets surrounding a binary star system, one containing a human population, the other daemon. Local lore claims that contrary to imperial doctrine, the first shots of the Horus Heresy were actually fired at Starbase Sumpter on Cackalackey IV.
Bayoulouana: A planet consisting of one perpetual swamp, fed by a mystical portal that drains all liquid filth from many of the other confederate worlds into Bayoulouana. Inhabited by both daemons and cults of Nurgle.
Tex: A warp-manifested planet orbiting a lone black star, home only to daemons, each of the four gods of chaos are equally represented. Lesser daemons from Tex often proclaim their loyalty to Tex itself above all other things, including their patron god. The current governer-daemon Ri-K'Per'y, a Tzeentchian lord of change with a penchant for almost khorne-like warfare often threatens to break the world into four smaller worlds in order to raise daemonic influence in the confederacy.
Agaviana: A sparsely populated desert-world, the last military action seen here was between the native Eldar tribes and the khornate warlord Santa'ana shortly after the Horus Heresy. Residents often complain to the confederacy that their planet is used by tyranids and other Xenos as an entry point to explore the eye of terror. Many wish for a large warp-wall to be built across the desert.
Bourbana: A Tzeentchian homeworld. Still working out details of fluff related to both Tzeentch and Kentucky.
I'm also still working out details for a Khornate world based on Georgia (Hellanta, perhaps?) and still trying to generate fluff for a world based on each of Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Missouri. I'm thinking whatever's based on Missouri will be an obliterator homeworld. Blame it on the inbreeding. Tennessee will obviously have some slaanesh influence, but it needs to be balanced out by at least one other god since Slaanesh has Florida outright. I'm also thinking that Tennessee will have the Tennessee Vehicle Assemblers (TVA) and be very mech-heavy. Alabama may be mech-heavy, also.
