I got some bad news today. I lost a friend. Peter McLaughlin was a great guy. I have known him since I was 10 years old. He had just retired from the National Guard as a Lt. Colonel and had just been promoted to Inspector with the Parkland police department. He had been a cop for almost 20 years and was an adjunct professor at the police academy in Urbana IL. He was a good man.
He married a girl he met in the Phillipines several years ago and adopted her son Paul when he was just a small child. She took off a couple of years ago after draining their bank accounts to open her own shop in the Phils. Paul stayed. He was a troubled kid by most accounts and evidently the relationship with his dad was getting strained.
This past Thursday Paul and 2 of his teenage friends got Peter to go down to the basement under some pretext where they abmushed him and struck him from behind with his own police baton. They beat him repeatedly and then Paul stabbed him 19 times in the back of the neck.
They stuffed his body in the crawlspace under the house and continued to live there for the next four days. Peter was very close to his family. When his folks hadn't heard from him by friday night they became concerned.
When he didn't show up for work on Sunday the authorities began to investigate. They searched the house where Paul and one friend were still staying and found his body. The third kid is still at large as I write this. Both Paul and the 16 year old are being charged with murder (the other boy confessed and gave the whole story) and because of the extremely violent and heinous nature of the crime are probably going to get 100 years in jail as opposed to 20-60.
I am surprizingly not mad at Paul. He's a fucked up kid who has had a pretty fucked up life. The fact that he destroyed the only decent stable person he has ever known is a testament to that. I am, however, devastated by the loss of such a good person and friend.
Rest in peace my brother.

On a lighter note, I obviously agree that anything named Jami Gertz must be tasty!
