I think I figured out why I resent this years Olympics so much. It became clear watching the gold medal ceremony last night. (the one we won our first ever gold on home soil).
That's when it hit. First, when people were saying they've never been prouder to be Canadian..I thought, it's sad you have to get proud of other peoples accomplishments instead of creating your own. (loved ones accomplishments I understand as well) Then I realized, my "accomplishment" days are behind me. I will never compete in sports for championships or for a spot on a national team..ever again. I mean, I will play sports but never be part of a real team, never have that feeling in the dressing room...a bunch of guys all chatting, joking, all trying to out "relax" the next guy, meanwhile you're scared to death..until the puck drops.
Even boxing, there is no club here so I can't train or even help coach younger boxers. Roller Hockey has all but disappeared so no recreational or coaching there either.
I wrote a book, I was hoping that if I got published it would give me the same satisfaction, a little bit of the glory I once felt and miss so much but even if I do get published, it's not like being part of a team..
I guess it's all part of getting old.
On the upside, I did buy an awesome Yves St Laurent morning coat for $90. Go me.
I am going to do my best to get over myself and get into the olympic spirit...go Canada.
