I went on a date with this girl last weekend - well, lady, actually, since she was in her 30s - and whilst riding the metro into the city, we had a discussion about ethics. I made the assertion that although I am left of centre on the political spectrum, I often find it frustrating that a lot of people on the left are afraid to discuss topics touching morality and use the idea of relativism to avoid making judgements about values. Then, I went on an irreverent tangent about how this reluctance to take a stand allowed stuff like pan flute music to flourish, all said in jest. She seemed to take offense about the pan flute statements, and it appeared to me that she believed I was calling for a ban of pan flute music. She chastised me, and pointedly asked if I'd ever tried to play a pan flute. She then went on a spiel about how she was a strong believer in relativism. I avoided asking her whether she felt the practices of mutilating the genitalia of young women and arranged marriages fell under the philosophical protection of relativism, but I didn't want to start a shouting match on the train. Anyway, the date went kind of downhill from there. The ironic part was that later on in the evening, she called the neighbourhood in which I live 'a pit' and claimed that nothing worthwhile had come out of there.
Dates are like furniture from Ikea. They come with no understandable instructions to put them together, there are always pieces that are either missing or just don't fit, and even if you do manage to assemble the assorted components into something that resembles what is seen in photos, what you have built will fall apart unexpectedly on you.
I should know better than to date these lawyer types. Sigh. Anyone know where I can meet a girl who thinks making video games is a cool career?

I just have to think of an amusing name for this cursing, monocle and top-hat wearing photoset!
