For those of you who aren't aware. The brain has multiple states of awareness. The electrical activity of the brain can be monitored via electroencephalography.
There's average state of mind which is either Beta or Alpha. that's when your brainwaves are oscillating at between 12-20 Hz. that's 12 to 20 cycle waves a second.
There's also a state called theta. theta is the frequency range from 4 Hz to 8 Hz and is associated with drowsiness, childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. this frequency can sometimes be produced by hyperventilation.
theta waves can be seen during hypnagogic states such as trances, hypnosis, deep day dreams, lucid dreaming and light sleep and the preconscious state just upon waking, and just before falling asleep.
what's so great about theta? It leads to very interesting states of mind. However, accessing it at will is quite tricky. I've actually made different recordings with synthesizers that pulse at theta frequency. that helps enormously when i meditate.
i used to have a big problem with falling asleep trying to get to theta...now it's alright.
being in theta space is a fantastically creative headspace to be in. there's quite little in terms of brain chatter and idle mental things. it's a very lucid space.
the point to being in theta consciously is that it gives you more an access to yourself that's unfettered by your normal conscious self. you get closer to the realer you.
and in the process you might see things in theta that you don't normally see when you are fully awake and conscious.
what exactly? well...i wont spoil it.
Sometimes you see visions, that's a great thing. visions can pop up and seem like a dream. where do they come from? who knows. but they are there. the more meditate or relax in theta space, and turn off your brain. the more lucid you feel. more of that inner peace begins to develop.
there are alot of tribes throughout the world that have shamen who are highly capable of using visions as a means of guidance as well as divination.
There's a tribe in south america called the Kogi. They have spiritual leaders that are called Mamas. Mamas are chosen at birth and they spend the first 9 years of their lives in a dark enclosed cave. There they receive messages and learn how to vision naturally.
after the 9 years, they are released from the cave...and begin their role as a spiritual advisor and counselor to the tribe.
The Mamas of the Kogi were able to foresee the coming conquests of the Spanish, and instructed the tribe to pack up and move to various places in the mountains to elude being captured or sent into slavery.
Many other tribes were conquered or succumbed to the diseases of the Spanish. The Kogi still live on to this day.
They have a belief in something called the Aluna. which is a world within this world.
Its the essence of all life and energy from which all things spring forth. and all creation exists in the Aluna world as well.
The interesting thing, going back to the first years of life for a Mama child. Is it learns in total darkness in the cave, about the earth, about animals, the ocean. not by actually seeing it or physically going there. but by touching it's spirit in the Aluna.
To the Kogi, the spirit of everything is in the Aluna. It's fascinating stuff really.
