I've spent most of last week dragging my fiance with me to my bakery and teaching him how to ice cakes, the differences between buttercream and non-dairy whipped topping, and how to pipe lovely borders, roses, and balloons.
He had his first day as a cake decorator at another one of our bakeries, hired by my desperate boss. (His pay is well below mine, but he can probably get a raise once he gets more experience)
He caught on faster than I did when I started, but I like to think that's due in part to the fact that his teacher wasn't a raunchy bitch like mine all were.
His bakery doesn't take very many customer orders so he'll mostly work on keeping his display case full with a variety of things (mostly rose and balloon cakes). There's a huge relief between us, two months was a long time without work and we were dying. Every time I called to check in on him, or he called me with a question (Kind of a train-by-phone sort of deal) he sounded a lot happier than he normally does.
I feel a lot lighter and a lot more optimistic - I hate seeing him sad and depressed, and he seems in a very good mood. I think he'll like it. Being a Cake Decorator may not be the most fabulous job in the world but it's fun, laid back, and after a while you can make some pretty good money (and the schedule is perfect to eventually work in some schooling - you mostly start work from 5 am to 7 am and never get off later than 3 pm).
He's made me a frozen strawberry daiquiri (we bought a bit of booze to celebrate). Delicious.
I'm utterly in love.
