I just finished my first training session at the Anti-Cruelty Society.
I'm really excited to start, but of course I can't start yet - I have to attend an animal handling session, which isn't for another three weeks. (If I wasn't also doing theatre volunteer work, I'd be able to attend the handling session this afternoon - instead I either have to take a morning off of work in three weeks, or wait even longer.) .....Then after getting certified in animal handling, I have to train for the specific program I go into.
And I can't decide which program to do. The volunteer coordinator asks that you only do one program to start (probably because they don't want to use more hours training you than you can give back as a volunteer).
I am choosing between:
- Cat adopts
- Dog adopts
- Patient Care
- Pet Finder - photos and pet descriptions for website
and then later:
- Cat socialization (requires 25 hours in cat adopts first)
- Dog socialization (requires 25 hours in dog adopts)
- Good manners (requires 25 hours in dog adopts)
- Physical exams (requires 25 hours in cat or dog adopts or patient care)
I want to do it all.
It seems like I have to choose between cats and dogs immediately. At home I'm more of a cat person, but with limited time, I love how playful dogs are.
I can't wait to start. I just wish my next training session were sooner.
And I'd love to do the website - and I'd be good at it, as a photographer, writer, and web designer.....but I want to do more than just web, and I worry that I'll want a more direct connection to the well-being of the animals - plus it will limit me as far as where I can move.
I guess my decision might be a spur of the moment choice based upon the training schedule or work hours.
I really am eager to start. Move faster, time!!

esme:
If it were me, I'd put in the work for dog socialization. But that is me.

i'd go with your way and select whatever fits best, so long as it's stuff you would enjoy.
