I don't think that's right... I think I skipped a bit when describing the problem. On the installation when I explicitly selected the 8139too driver, it showed two ethernets, eth0 and eth1. After that, I re-installed without selecting a driver; the installer used its own driver, and all the above troubleshooting was done after that. So yes, the installer did see the card, as far as I can tell. But if I'm wrong, please tell me.
P.S. I also tried swapping out for another card (Linksys) and re-installing all over again. Same damn problem.
Aha! The site you linked me to said somehting about 'PnP OS' in the BIOS being turned off. I checked my BIOS, turned off the PnP OS option, reinstalled, and the network is working now! Yippee!
Currently re-installing Xwindows and all the other packages.
