today i'm off to philly. i'm going to do some south street shopping, and then a show later on at the pontiac grille. the headliner is HR (formerly of the bad brains), but the main attraction for me is this old ska singer who's opening the show. his name is eric 'monty' morris. i'm sure the crowd will be there for HR, but i can't believe i get to see this guy. the first ska record (fine, this can be argued) was 'they got to go' by prince buster. but the second was 'humpty dumpty' by eric morris. i've only got three songs by this cat on really obscure comps, but i'm pretty pysched to see it cuz i can't believe he's still alive. hope everybody is gearing up for a nice weekend, i'm sure gonna be happy with a ton of new c.d.'s.
update- the show went really good. i got to see one of the masters of ska performing his biggest hits- 'humpty dumpty', 'solomon a gundy', 'penny reel', higher than the highest mountain', 'say i'm back' and others. heard some dipshits in the crowd going, 'who is this guy? is he even jamaican?' after the set i got to chat with him and his wife, got autographs, all that good stuff. HR was in a very laidback mood. he performed all reggae material (i was expecting that), but he threw in a lot of the brain's old reggae stuff.
another update sat. morning: MDC, one of the greatest of the old hardcore punk bands, played a spectacular show in baltimore tonight at the sidebar. they're playing in upper darby, pa tomorrow, if any of you guys are interested. i had heard bad shit about the sidebar but honestly, the last two show i saw there were just great. MDC rocked the house, played all my faves, and dave and the entire band were cool enough to sign my shirt. good slam pit too.
looks like tonight i'll be getting up with a couple SG buddies, including Mr. MasterBrian and his stunning gal Niina. i'm having a pretty good weekend all in all!
