take five:

if you wanna play Jazz... leave America behind... Brubeck played in a "mixed race" band in the army--and when he came back to the u.s. of a he found out they couldn't stay or play together in half the states of the union (unlike today when it's ... well, about the same actually) -- so back to Europe they went, or stayed north......

In some respects it is a 1 step forward 4 backwards kind of thing. Lewis Carol had the gist with the Caucus Race. ** As a Dead follower you might get a kick out of this: in my Blog the other week I challenged people to take "El Paso" and write Felina's point of view. @dhyani rose to the challenge, her version can be seen on my Blog Page and in the Writers Group - Poets Thread ( easier to read here and she put up one of the Dead concert takes. * I'm interested in your opinion. Enjoy.

that would the name of this tune... from the inarguably (yeah, right) best jazz album ever. and group.... Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans...

Kind of Blue was THE album for a long time; from its creation in 59 at least until 70 when he did Bitches Brew... Miles was a sad figure as often happens in jazz... he grew backwards for the most part.....

@ferkixlll you're most welcome... they weren't always good, but when they were good, they were--and remain--great.

@ferkixlll -- I had a VW bug with a blown Porsche engine and a modified tranny, drive train etc.  Looked like a lil bug on the road, but held the road at 40 in 2nd, 75 in 3rd, and I got clocked at 115 in fourth (with a tail wind).  In those days I stopped only to pee, get gas & more coffee to wash down my, um, 'helpers' -- and felt like i was 200 years old when the drugs wore off... but i did enjoy making time blowing through the night--this was in the mid-60s when the interstates were just coming in, and there were long stretches of empty two-lane roads with local radio stations crackling in and out of existence as we high-balled hither and yon.   only got stopped once, and the cop just said, "take it slower till you get out of my area, I don't wanna clean up the gore" so I did.  // nowadays it's a freakin' 4 cylinder Outback with more software than my computer... meh //   I hope you and your bits and bobs of family enjoy some of this season - it is so often a mixed bag!

My VW was a Baja'd '68 in Nov '81 from Denver to S. Of Pittsburgh where the Oil Pump let go. Surprised that I got that far, as every 50 miles I had to use a Propane torch to thaw the Venturi  ( let that sink in). But my x-country was 18 wheels with some constraints on how I did it. ( like a comment so that it is flagged and a person will know to look for an answer ).

this album - Wee Tam, along with Big Huge and "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" catch a remarkable, light, prescient, wise impulse that blossomed and faded from (public) sight all too soon.... as one who lived through those days in a commune and also the Chicago Democratic Convention, guns on campus at Cornell - the light was so very much brighter and the response to irresponsible...

Go to Burningman.org and look for the link to "live webcast" - it is more secure than the youtube link. the temple will probably burn shortly after sundown in Nevada but I bet it will be more like 9 pm their time. it is a beautiful structure, and the fire should be amazing

11

you can either search for it on youtube as "burning man livestream" or go to (and join) Camp Envy at

https://www.campenvy.com/

which will also let you send a message to be placed in the temple, which will then burn with the temple on Sunday next.

Compared to youtube or other edited and often self-obsessed videos of burningman the webcam and its operator Motorbikematt is the...

I heard this on the radio 50 years ago, along with Howl, The Lion for Real, and something by Burroughs... blew me right out of high school and into the underground where I met folk arming Che Guevara (really)... i won't say those times were better - they weren't--but they surely weren't worse, and the leadership was only pathetic (Nixon & Johnson) not evil..
