Well, whaddayaknow? Another Friday has crept up on us like a predator pouncing on its prey! ...then again, that sounds like a negative thing. It's more like coming home, somewhat tired from the week, and as you turn on the lights, Friday jumps out from behind the couch, throwing confetti at your face, blowing a party horn, and yelling, "Surprise!"
Do tell, friends, how has your week been? I hope mostly good. Mine has been a mixed bag, but there have certainly been some highlights. For example, a friend of mine was scheduled to go away for a while for health reasons, which means that when my birthday arrives on the 20th, she won't be able to hang out and celebrate with me. However, I was invited to stop by to chit-chat and watch some TV. It was a hangout session where she also surprised me with a birthday present in advance; that gift card to a local movie theater that I mentioned a couple of days ago.
I did not hesitate to go check out Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Alvarez, and gaddamn, my chest was burst open by a Xenomorph called Joy because this was the fresh blood we needed to course-correct the franchise after Prometheus and Covenant.
My first encounter with Alvarez's work was the brutally sinister and violent 2013 remake of Evil Dead. You might also know him from the two Don't Breathe movies. He really brought that energy to the Alien franchise and made it scary again. Without spoiling anything, it also helps that the story of this movie takes place between the first two movies, essentially making this Alien 1.5. I dare say that Alien: Romulus is the best installment since the first two!
The beauty of it is that I also have more left on the gift card, so I get to go see another movie. I might actually do that tonight. I'm curious about Longlegs. The stunning beauty of Maika Monroe and the unhinged craziness of Nicolas Cage? Sign me up.
I've also tried to read a little bit, but there have been days when I haven't felt fully focused. Ah, the joys of mental health, amirite? I hope to do some more reading during the weekend, though. I hope to finish the first of the five books in the Norwegian crime series featuring Detective Harinder Singh, The Silent Week.
Does anyone else have any interesting weekend plans? What are you watching, what are you reading, where are you going, what will you be eating? ...and so on. Please let me know, while we listen to some Vanitas!
