I was watching some NCAA b-ball tournament action this weekend, and I was totally shocked by the music in a commercial I saw. In an automobile ad for KIA with OnStar, the music was from a Dearborn, Michigan band called Pas/Cal (mentioned in the March 2004 SPIN, in the Von Bondies article).
I met Pas/Cal a year ago here in Chicago when my roommate had the band stay at our loft (girlfriends and all) when they played a local show. They left me their CD when they stayed with us, so I knew the tunes. Not that they aren't good -- they're great, actually -- but getting a song used in a car commercial that's getting aired on prime time on national TV during a major sporting event is fucking huge.
Lord knows radio is a joke these days, so hey, whatever gets the music out there and pays the bills. More power to 'em, I say. I just couldn't believe that guys who stayed at my house not too long ago were finding their way onto TV in such a way.
