I think most dictionaries define misogyny incorrectly. It isn’t really a conscious hatred of women, its subconscious hatred of women, while consciously thinking that most women are idiots and/or children and/or non-persons.
This part of the definition is the most interesting to me “….Other forms of misogyny may be more subtle. Some misogynists may simply be prejudiced against all women, or may hate women who don't fall into one or more acceptable categories. Entire cultures may be said to be misogynist if they treat women in ways that can be seen as harmful. Examples include forcing women to tend to all domestic responsibilities, demanding silence from a woman, or beating a woman regularly.”
So, if you demand that a person be silent unless they have something pleasant to say, you’re possibly a misogynist. You might also be a parent at a dinner table.
You might be a misogynist who feels that in general women require a man like yourself to parent them. You might even be a woman who feels that other women need someone to parent them and provide limits for them on what they’re allowed to talk about.
A word that sometimes gets brought up when discussing misogynists and their actions is Sociopath. “Sociopaths are interested only in their personal needs and desires, without concern for the effects of their behavior on others.”
Example: ABC Corporation dropped 2 million pounds of toxic material into a river that people swim in. Since corporations are people (according to the case law), we can say that ABC Corp is obviously a sociopath. Note that it would be more conventional and probably just as accurate to say that John, the CEO of ABC Corporation, is a sociopath. John however “knows” that he is a normal guy, and that he is not a sociopath, and his absence of guilt sensations does not strike him as curious. He does not for a moment believe that he could use the complete absence of guilt sensations as a source of knowledge about his true condition as a sociopath.
