The proper way to permanently break a habit is to experience normal suffering and never attempt to make it stop. Dont wish for it to stop. Dont wish for it to continue for that matter. Dont try to alter it in any way. Dont enjoy it. Dont ignore it. Dont give it any additional power except the power to create noises. Which is the only power it has. It may grow loud and intense because it probably hasnt been listened to for decades and it will assume it only has a limited amount of time. But listen to the noise in a simple way, for the sake of recognizing its voice, not for the sake of learning how to be free and permanently blissed out in dreamland. This is either obvious or gibberish. Its the equivalent of saying, do whatever you do normally except change the way you relate to pain and the nerve-endings will be revealed for what they are: noise machines and that's all. Ultimately, reacting to ones pain in a reasonable way is a fine idea. But what is still more important is probably the ability to listen inwardly without feeling compelled, without feeling like a slave to instinct, a conditioned victim that must immediately apply a salve. Every pain is a symptom of some idea the body has. The body is ultimately the source of every bit of knowledge we have. Dull the ache, and youve destroyed the symptom, which is what doctors do, and doctors are ridiculous. Conclusion: Pain is a voice to be listened to, it can be shut up when necessary, but first it ought to be listened to.
Anything that effectively dulls the awareness of a problem, becomes habit forming.
