So, I've now seen The Dark Knight - and as expected, I cried for our loss.
The movie is great - but is truly made by Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker. The way he has brought this character to life, the way he has shaped him ... is truly iconic. I felt quite sad and angry for a good couple of days after first seeing it because I was so impressed and moved by the performance I'd experienced. Ledger created the Joker of the 21st century - and he's dark and perfect.
The movie itself is slow at some points, and can occasionally feel like scenes without the Joker are just filler - but when you look at the whole picture it's quite a good piece and definitely worth seeing. It's not as good as a movie as Batman Begins, but it does present better characters. In this we get Batman (obviously), The Joker (obviously) and Harvey Dent / Two Face as our main characters. There are the usual others like Jim Gordan, Rachel Dawes, Alfred and Lucius Fox - as well as a quick reappearance of The Scarecrow.
It has a lot of very funny moments, and a lot of very memorable scenes. I laughed a lot more times then I thought I would. It's a good little mix of dark humor, action and drama. Really, it's got a little bit for everyone's tastes. You will come away with a lot of catch phrases to remember the good scenes by too: "How about a magic trick?" - "Why so serious?" - "Wanna know how I got these scars?" - "And here ... we ... go!"
I've seen it 3 times at the movies now and it has been worth every visit. To the rest of you who might not be so obsess-able, it's definitely at least worth one trip to your local theatre. As far as I'm concerned, Heath Ledger's performance is the best so far this year (and for a long time). Now, can you tell me you'd want to miss seeing that on a screen bigger then your lounge room?
I will miss you Heath Ledger - such a talent lost way too soon.
Go and see this movie. "Let's put a smile on that face."

He was taking the drugs he died from because playing The Joker had a negative effect on him.
