A 14-track recording of home demos by Yeah Yeah Yeahs front woman, Karen O, has been leaked over the internet. A CD-R, with an Oscar Wilde quote hand-scrawled by Karen on the cover , was obtained by the leaker from discarded suitcases outside an apartment previously inhabited by TV On The Radio's David Sitek. Sitek was made aware of the leak shortly after the songs were posted to the web, and left an angered and exasperated post on his blog. Sitek assumed the CD-R had been stolen from belongings he mistakenly believed to have been lost in a house fire. According to Sitek's post, a nerdy indie-blogger uploading discarded demos onto the "interwebs" is somehow linked to humankind's appetite for war, the rape of the environment, murdering children, and the extinction of all.
"to whomever found/stole/"unearthed" the demos that karen gave me and posted them on the internet/indierock fireman ....
thank you. i am due to learn a new kind of forgiveness. a kind that all of of humanity will need to learn as we betray eachother , hurt eachother, steal from eachother..."
"all you got was what you just gave me as i read about it. a heartsickening murmur and an INSISTANCE that we are dumb animals with no purpose and too much free time. we will continue to go to wars , we will die of disease , we will kill our children , we will shame our parents , we will steal from our family, we will poison the land that gives us life , we will deny the existence of the godly, and we will become extinct."
Whoa! This guy totally hates people!
Sitek was later given a better context for how the demos were obtained, and rethought his imagined apocalypse, posting an apology to his blog.
"I APOLOGIZE FOR THE TONE OF THE LETTER I WROTE A FEW HOURS AGO"
" ... I FREAKED OUT (not thinking it was my suitcases discarded by a friend , which I DO KNOW is ultimately my own fault, but rather ASSUMED (wrongfully) it was from one of many boxes discarded by the firemarshall after a housefire) AND WROTE THIS POST. Since then , the story was told to me, by the person ...he apologized..."
"I apologized to [the leaker] for my tone .... then read about how awful i am on a few websites by people [that] like doing that sort of thing. by flipping out i connected with something i had lost... i am not taking down the post because i want to be reminded how much of an ass i can be, and if i forget , i am comforted by the fact that the blogs... the web... will always be there to remind me."
David, I'm here , now, reminding you- in case you forgot already.
Karen herself has now weighed-in on the leak debacle on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs website.
Good grief, can't say I don't feel a little grossed out by someone taking a liberty with music that was mine and Dave's. Shit happens nonetheless. All I can do at this point is offer up a recommendation... if you happen to get your mits on one of those old demos floating around MY personal favorites and the ONLY ONES I would
have released for anyone to enjoy is "Pumpkin" and "Snakes and Worms". The rest I probably would have pitched or buried for while longer. No use bitching about something that's out of my control.
Chin up,
ko
Two of the demos can still be found here..
