I'm never sure how much English music really makes it across the Atlantic, but I'd suggest, if you don't already know them, The Last Shadow Puppets 'Age of the Understatement', which is a collaboration between Miles Kane of Liverpool band The Rascals, and Alex Turner of The Arctic Monkeys (who I'm sure you must know).
It's very retro - swinging Sixties style - beautifully harmonized too. And I'm always a sucker for a string backing:

Oh, don't worry - I didn't take it the wrong way! Glad you've got such a cool Mum. And glad you like the suggestions too. Apart from an annual trip to the Cambridge Folk Festival with friends, we don't get out to concerts that much now. The last one was Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds a few months back - they were superb though. Any tips coming back from your way always welcome too. And next time we and our friends are over in Florida, I might beg some leads on the local acts.

Sounds very stressy. I know it's sometimes a tough call, but would it not be worth trying to talk it through? Not coming out with a laundry list of issues, but just making a couple of observations about her behaviour and how it makes you feel, without rubbing her face in it? Maybe she'll just fly off the handle anyway, but at least you'll know then, that even when the issues are pointed out to her, she's not interested in addressing them. Hope it works out - it's a nightmare, sometimes, sharing with 'friends'!
