When I was about 5 years old and living in upstate New York one day I casually walked out of the front yard of some friends of my parents. They lived right on the main drag of Moira NY and so there was lots to see, even if it was a small little town. There were some shops and people bustling about and I decided I wanted to walk around and take this all in.
I walked into a local drinking establishment, climbed up on a bar stool and ordered a milk. Two gentlemen at the bar thought I was hilarious but also realized I was really somewhere I was not suposed to be. So after paying for my milk these guys took me home. My Mom happened to be checking the house at the same time (she was out looking for me, as a Mom should) and found the two guys dropping me off.
This folks, was my first foray into adventure and since then I have been a bit of an addict. My first bike, my first car, even my first bit of freedom as a little kid all opened new chapters in my life of geographical exploration. Believe it or not, not having a car has opened up many more doors because it has lessened my options for every day exploration and has made me take a new look at places like Boston, Worcester and the North Shore. When you only have a handful of places you can get to via inexpensive public transportation you make the most of what you have.
Adventure, of course, is not what most folks see it as. It is not always taking your life in your own hands. All adventure is, and all leading an adventurous life needs to be is looking at the world with no plan. Walking out your door each and every day and letting your surroundings decide your fate. Living your life not as a solo act but as a collaboration between yourself and all that you encounter on a day to day basis.
I want to start from this day living my life more as an adventure.
It is obvious that this is my calling and it is when I have this sense of adventure that I am the most happy.
I never want my spare time to be shackled by specific plans ever again.
