A compilation of my favorite NIN lyrics.
"the me that you know is now made up of wires
and even when i'm right with you i'm so far away"
"Why do you get all the Love in the world?"
"hiding backwards inside of me i feel so unafraid"
"and even when i'm right with you i'm so far away"
|perfect little dream the kind that hurts the most
forgot how it feels "
"covered in hope and vaseline
still cannot fix this broken machine"
|i tried
i gave up"
A common theme I'm seeing here is the reference to self as a machine, we are machines, mechanical in nature. A lot of depair in the lyrics, a lot of feelings of loneliness, hatred for the situation the artist has been put in.
One of the reasons I like NIN so much is it doesn't harp so much on love songs like most artists, in fact he dives into feelings that most artists tend to overlook because it's uncomfortable to think about.
A lot of his songs dwell on sex, more so then love, which is very animalistic, feelings we might deny or not express because in the puritanical society in which we were raised sex is considered a product of love instead of the other way around, or rather we'd like to think so. In my personal opinion it's the other way around though, love being the biproduct of sex, fullfilling an animalistic need to propogate the species we dilude our minds with what we consider a higher emotion of some sort of bond. The only bond that is created is the self dilusionment that there is some sort of special connection to someone we have sex with.
When in reality you can gain the same benefits from a friendship that you can from your sexual partner, the only seperating line would be that of sex and sexual contact. Which is why it's so hard to be friends with a person you are attracted to, the reason being the only line seperating a love relationship and a friendship is sex, and by nature we all feel a strong urge to propogate and therefore want to have sex.
Sex is just a bodily function like urinating or pooping, not that it is so disgusting, if you think of such activities as disgusting, it's just something we do. I think if sex was treated as such and such simple bonds were destroyed we could love more people, you aren't limited to whom you love, in fact you would have preferences as to who you wanted to have sex with, and you'd have closer friends in some then in others.
The world would probably be a better place if more people just had sex like they do going to the bathroom, I'm sure there would be less teenagers wanting to shoot their teachers, less criminals, less violence in general. After all why would you want to destroy your life or others when you are having sex on a regular basis.
In not limiting who your partner is people wouldn't absorb themselves in one individual and would be more social creatures with others, this would make for less lonely people, in fact there would hardly be any lonely people at all because people would be too busy having sex.
There is another strong urge in us as well, wanting something new. "nothing quite like the feel of something new" Indeed people would seek out new people, to satiate their urges that would lead them to see out those that may be shy or not as open and out there as the rest of the populous.
With greater exposure to more individuals people would pick up knowledge and with that knowledge their lives would be more fullfilling as well, being better sexually equiped to deal with the acts involved and making everything more fullfilling for everyone involved.
so go fuck your neighbor.
