I got suckered into a debate about the state of American politics over lunch. I'm very much opposed to spoiling any meal with such talk. However, I was faced with one of those overly-vocal foreign nationals who assumes that the opinions of her and what she assumes are the opinions of her country men are of the utmost interest to me. After listening to her condescending British drawl droning on about how stupid American voters are, I had had enough.
"You'll pardon me," I said gently, "if I don't credit the political acumen of a country that elected Margaret Thatcher more than once."
She very kindly let me finish my lunch in peace.
