Plato. The allegory of the cave is just classic, and a reasonably good sort of thing on which to base one's worldview.
Now, Plato's views on the social order, on the other hand...
And, no, black_tar_heroin... philosophy is not a crutch. Nobody claims to be right (unless they're fools). Rather, philosophers expound on how they see the world, that others may take inspiration from their thoughts and, hopefully, build upon them.

Its good that I had a lot of musical training before picking it up. I'd rather not just use it to make woo-woo noises.
