Yesterday I went to a good old Hub City staple, a basement show. This is a city where at least once a week you can go see bands play in someone's basement. This is an ancient tradition in the city of New Brunswick going all the way back to the early days of the Bouncing Souls who's home was host to a whole lot of these shows. Half the time instead of being referred to by addresses the houses are referred to by the band that lived there. (there was talk last night about a show at the 'Thursday house'). It's a neat little tradition here and going made me nostalgic. (I attended my first one in 1988 when I was still in high school) Last night, there were four bands and it lasted most of the evening since the headlining band's (from Milwaukee) van broke down in Pennsy yesterday and they had to figure alternate plans which involved them getting a u-haul and us having some down time between bands where we actually were waiting fo them to arrive.(which sucks a lot for them because they were supposed to buy a new van since they are in the middle of a tour but there were some sort of insurance issues that prevented them from buying it in NJ, Penn or NY.) They played a really good set and it was a lot of fun and because of their poor luck we just had to take them out to the bar after the show. Going out with friends and having a good time is such an amazing moodlifter. I need to try and do it more before I leave here.
Plus extra bonus!!! The free Camel Cigarettes guy was at the bar last night! This means that I left the house with one and a half packs of smokes, and smoked more than usual at the show but still returned home with more cigarettes than I left the house with! ( little things can make me so happy)
Later: (and then little things can crush me )
I messaged someone I used to know through Myspace the other day and he replied to me. I wanted to get an idea of what he's been up to before replying so I was looking at his Myspace page and discovered that one of the worst things that I can imagine happening has happened to him within the past year. Now I'm not sure how to reply. It seems that whenever I need to be reminded of how much worse things can be, I discover something that will remind me and all my self-pity turns to empathy.
Yes folks this is the emotional rollercoaster that is my life these days.
Later still:
This is the journal entry that is never done.
I like to give cards and write notes. I think it is one of the best ways to remind someone that you love them. I buy cards in multiples sometimes. If I am looking for a card and I find multiples that I like, I buy them to give at a later date. I just found one I bought for my husband but never gave him.
