A Question For The Field
I have a more detailed idea of something I'd like to discuss in a blog entry but for the time being....
Robert Altman died last week and most of the obits I saw listed "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" as one of the best (if not the best) film in his canon. I had gotten 'McCabe' from Netflix a few months ago. It took me a while to get through it and damned if I never really got into it. Apparently it's a masterpiece but I just thought it was well-made while not really engaging. It may be that I'll have to wait and see it again at some point in the future to really appreciate it.
I say that because I saw "Apocalypse Now" a few years back and didn't see the power of it. Then I sat down to watch it again tonight and it just clicked. So here's the question: What widely respected films have you watched and found acceptable but not Great. How 'bout others that it took you a few viewings to recognize as superlative.
Note: No widely respected movies that you flat-out hate. Those are easy to understand. I'm more curious about ones that didn't reach you at first or didn't reach you at all. I'll put in a few and edit to add more as I think of them
DIDN'T GET AT FIRST:
Apocalypse Now
Raging Bull
STILL DON'T GET:
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
Manchurian Candidate
The Philadelphia Story
