Foaming At The Mouth
R.I.P. Coach Walker; Your Like We'll Not Soon See Again
Such a sad day around here. I woke up early (at least for my standards) at 10AM, expecting one of the building maintenance guys to replace a part on my kitchen sink, and to catch the Germany-Argentina World Cup match. But of course I sat right down to check my usual websites, ESPN.com coming second right after Yahoo.
Right at the top of the news column on the right hand side of the page: "Northwestern coach dies of apparent heart attack". At first I figured it had to be a coach of some less-publicized sport, otherwise it would have named the coach or the sport in the headline. Nope. It was Coach Randy Walker of the football team. Aside from the fact that it's a devastating blow to the football program, not just this year but for years to come, the man was only fifty-two years old. Fifty-two. I had met him last March at a booster function and, even though I've known lots of people younger than he die quite suddenly, you just can't get past the immediate thought: "I just saw him a while ago. He looked great, so full of life."
I'm the nihilistic type; I don't go for lavender sentiments about spiritual things. Whenever things like this happen, all I can think is the cold reality of 'Here today, gone tomorrow'. But when you see such a sudden loss, you see the people who are affected by it much more profoundly than I am (family, close friends, students) and you hope they can find comfort in whatever gives them strength. No witty comments to close with, just a heavy heart for a smart, decent man who went too soon.

Quite the analagy you made there, mules and cars. I would probably be more understanding if it were an animal. But it's a manmade contraption, so I have no qualms in hating it's oil slicked guts.
