emo spidey!
ah well sometimes all the super villains and bs gets too much ya know
eh
so i had an awesome weekend at the mcdowell mt music festival of which i had tix for the entire event
and vip ones for the sat part
I went fri for the first day of it
we didnt make it there til 4 so the first band we saw there was Riders of the Pale something something or other
apparently they were members of the Grateful Dead i guess they were very old and jam bandey
i actually dont like jam bands too much but i was ok
the second one was Hot Tuna which apparently consists of members of jefferson airplane
which i did kind of like when i started listening to psychedelic bands ages ago but hot tuna
is way more jam band then psycedelic and their singer is not grace slick
then we went over to see Black Carl which is this local band that kinda sounded joss stone-ish
jazzy blues female vocals with a quality backing band.. ill have to try to see them again in a longer set
since their local
the we saw Michael Franti and Spearhead which was the group my friend wanted to see
they are a reggae/rock/hip hop mix and he had this Erika Badhu-ish back up singer lady
it was really uptempo a great beat and it definitely rocked way more than the other bands
i never heard him before but it was pretty awesome i gotta remember to dl some songs
Sat we got to get there earlier woke up about 11 and got over there about 1:30ish
we had vip passes so we headed to the vip area got some free drinks (NICE)
and sat in the shade for the afternoon
the first band we saw there was the Dubliners which was like your standard Irish Celtic band
kinda Flogging Molly i guess they played a Pogues song which was the only thing i recognized
they were competent
Then it was Indigenous which I dont really remember because I think i was getting kind of drunk by then with the free drinks. Railroad Earth was worth which I remember was bluegrass ....fiddles

I know we cut out midway through railroad to see what was on the local stages and we just missed kinch who i didnt know was playing damn it .... I like them alot but they're local....but the next band was Peachcake
which we watched and drank some margaritas by then ...
Peachcake is all pretty much electronic/beats freak out party music kinda like Peaches/Of Montreal/Girl Talk/Ladytron they wear weird costumes and are big on audience participation with dance contests and throwing things in the crowd and such stage diving etc..the lead singer was wearing a lamp shade for a part of it and everybody else seemed to be in modifed footie pajamas
So yeah then we went back to the vip area got some free food and watched the last two headliner bands
Matisyahu was next if you dont know he's like an orthodox jew reggae artist which means he's a genre unto himself since nobody else claims this... yeah im not big into reggae but i do like drinking though so more free drinks....
but it all was worth it for the FLAMING LIPS last band and they did not disappoint they had an awesome stage show involving teletubbies, tons of streamers, balloons, and a giant hamster ball Wayne Coyne the lead singer went inside and crowd surfed in! Which seems infinitely safer and funnier....
They really rock in concert and they played three of my fav. songs from yoshimi battles the pink robots...
the title track... FLIGHT TEST and the encore was Do You Realize? which I love too...
They also played she don't use jelly their one charting hit it was cool their lyrics are so strange and funny.
i like to describe them as radiohead if they had a sense of humor
they didnt play anything from the one album they have that was on 4 disks and you were supposed
to play all four at the same time to listen to it properly... one of my friends and I were thinking of having a listening party to try that since we never have done that.
sun was cool too i went to the magic release tourney i didnt do as well as I usually do went 2-1-1 and got 2 packs of magic cards for my trouble ... I had some bad luck with my one lost and my tie was because i wasnt aggressive enough which is generally my plan ....beat my opponent before I make a mistake and lose... oh well still fun and i got some cool cards

Glad ya had a nice weekend at the music fest. now find a good fest. in Tucson, and you can crash on the couch. I'd offer the blow-up mattress if the cat hadn't completely shredded it while I was trying to fold it and put it in the closet! I'd be pissed, but seriously, how can you be pissed at a little ball of fur?
Ummm other news, engineering missiles is a great freaking job. Waking up in the morning thinking of how to make shit go boom always brings a smile, even on the shitty days... mmmm yeah... *mind wanders*
anyhow, theres a downtown with beer calling on a Saturday night.
