Dude, Duncan Fegredo rocks the shit out of Hellboy. It's very hard to look forward to anyone else drawing this comic, but I am more than satisfied.
Fegredo is a technically better artist than Mignola. However, mignola's style is what makes him so great. Notice I am talking style vs. technical skill. For this, Fegredo applies Mike's rendering style to his own art, so it still looks exactly like Hellboy should, but with more backgrounds, better perspective, more detail. I can't believe how fucking good it is.
I was just about to scan you some pages, but I couldn't close the scanner cover without janking up my copy. sorry. Anyways, I was blown the fuck away.
City of Others was slightly disappointing, in my opinion, but I liked it enough to read on for a few more issues.
It is not Bernie's best work, and plus they've unfortunately decided to go with the no-inker approach, just pencils and color. I don't always hate this technique, but Wrightson's art is definitely weakened without the sharp, heavy black. On the plus side, the colorist is using a custom palette based very closely on Wrightson's fully painted works, and it looks dead-on.
Story-wise, nothing really happened in issue one, but I was encouraged by the editor's remarks in the back that specifically said this would be a slowly-unfolding story, and that they wouldn't touch on the core of it for quite some time. I am also a Niles fan, but he is more here to give Bernie's story a script that reads well.
I got #2 this week and haven't read it, I'll let you know how it goes. Don't think I hated it, I am just being a harsh critic because it didn't quite meet my expectations. I want to love it, though, so I remain optimistic!
