WARNING: This shit is long.....
Well I suppose it's time for an update. I started on one the other day, but I accidently erased it. Because I rock that hard. So yeah, hopefully I can make it through this one
Well last Sunday I finally made it down to the San Diego Comic-Con. By myself I might add. TheSeadog was taking a train down there to meet me, but he got hung up in Oceanside for a while, and well...We'll get to that later. So the place was cool as shit. So much stuff to see, it was a complete sensory overload. Well I wandered around for a while just to get an idea of where things were, but that was useless. There was so much shit packed in together and there were just huge displays hiding behind other huge displays. And fuck looking at a map. Maps are for girls.
So around 12:30 I started looking for the Aspen booth, since that would be my first choice of companies to work for. They were supposed to be doing portfolio reviews from 1-2 PM so I needed to get going. I couldn't find the place and ended up wandering into artist's alley where I ran into Joe Benitez. Benitez is the fucking man and his work on the Darkness was the whole reason I got into comics in the first place.
Okay, flashback to a year ago at the Comic-Con in Long Beach. I went to the preview night for the sole purpose of meeting Joe since that was the only night he was going to be there. Well I found him and he was cool as hell and I ended up hanging out with him for a couple hours and just bullshitting with him about comics and art and stuff. I bought some art prints off of him that he signed and he drew a sketch of the Darkness for me. I was psyched I ended up running into him the following day as we passed each other at the bathrooms so we talked for a few more minutes and I gave him my card. Unfortunately at the time, I didn't have my portfolio on me, it was back at my hotel, because he said he'd like to check it out. So I kicked myself in the ass for that one. Over the next couple months we had sent a couple emails back and forth and that was it.
Well when I ran into him the other day, I just kinda nodded from the back of the crowd and I was surprised that he instantly recognized me and called me over. He asked how everything was going and if I had any luck getting into the business yet. I hadn't really made much of an attempt since the last time we had met and told him that's why I was there today. To get reviewed and stuff. So we hung out for a little bit and he said that he had to go do a signing at the DC booth for a couple hours, but he wanted me to come back so he could check out my work. I tried to buy this little sketchbook thing he was selling for $10 but he told me to just take one. Fuck yeah! Free shit from one of my favorite artists? All those other suckers had to pay, but it would have been worth the $10 So anyways he kinda pointed me in the right direction to Aspen and I was off.
When I finally got there it was just coming up on one so at least I wasn't late. I talked to the Vice President of the company, Frank, about getting a review, but Peter Steigerwald, the guy who does the reviews was so wrapped up in autographs he couldn't get away. So they asked if I had a packet of my work to turn in for a job submission. Luckily I had a few, so I dropped one off and went looking for Top Cow. I finally found them and pretty much the same thing happened there. They had done a few reviews that morning, but the people that handled that stuff were gone for the time being. So they asked for a submission too and that was that.
So around 2 sometime, still no Seadog, so I called him and he said somehow he fell asleep on the train and ended up jumping off in Oceanside or something. I dunno, did I get that right? Anywho, point is, we checked in periodically all day and he didn't end up at the Con untill 4:30. Which is a half hour before it closed. On the plus side, he didn't have to pay to get in
They had all kinds of cool shit though. I won't even begin to try and explain everything. But eventually later in the day, I ended up meeting with Benitez again and finally got someone to review my work. And him doing it was even more intimidating/awesome He didn't really have much to critique about the actual work. He said I had a lot of good line work and really just needed to spread the story out more. He said I was telling too much story in too few pages. Which I actually kinda did on purpose. I knew I wasn't going to get a whole lot of pages finished, and I wanted to be able to tell a quick little story so I made it to only span 3-4 pages. I guess it was the wrong thing to do though
So basically I just need to make things bigger and stretch them out more so it doesn't come off like I'm rushing the reader. Shouldn't be hard. Actually, that would be a lot easier Well I was very grateful for his time and we agreed to meet up at the next one.
The rest of the day was just spent running around staring at stuff and shopping like a girl. Oh yeah!!! I almost forgot!! I met the guys from Red Vs Blue!!!! If you don't know what that is, well then....I pity you. But yeah, the whole cast was there and I bought the Season 3 DVD which they signed for me and I got the "Caboose -1" shirt The guy that does the voice of Church sold me all my shit. He's a funny guy. So that was a little added bonus since I had no idea they were gonna be there.
So finally TheSeadog shows up just in time to make a mad dash through the convention hall and see everything we could in 30 minutes and then everyone was kicked out. So we headed back north and ended up on the wrong freeway several times I think, but finally got on track. He showed me this cool little Italian restaurant in San Clemente and made our way to Hollywood to drop him off. He's a good person to drive with. It's nice to have a decent conversation once in a while
Yeah, so that was pretty much how it went. I wish I could have had my reviews from Aspen and Top Cow, but hanging out with Benitez made up for it. We'll see if I hear anything from those companies, but if not, I'll just have to send some more shit in in a few months. Okay, so here's a few pictures from the con.....
The Enigma was there!! He was so nice and he's got his own little toy now!!!
He was such a cute little Predator, I had to get a picture with him...
They had one of the Lycan costumes from the Underworld movies. I want one. Bad.....
I'm not even quite sure what they were promoting. Some kind of Hulk thing. But they were hot....
These are the pages that I did for the con. The real ones are on 11X17 pages, and since SG won't allow large files this is the best I can do for now without compromising the quality. Also, I don't have a scanner large enough for 11X17, so I had to scan two halves and put them back together in photoshop. So that's why there's a line through the center of the pages Oh well, deal with it....
The Darkness/Witchblade page 1
page 2
page 3
These are a couple of character pinups from the Fathom series. The first one is Aspen, then Kiani.....
Okay, so that's it. Sorry that was so long. Thanks if any of you made it all the way through Late....
UPDATE: I'm going away for a while again. Heading up to Michigan. I'll see you when I get back. Late.....
