I'll be responding to comments in a bit. here's what's going on:
according to my neurologist, the current dose of topamax that I am taking could be contributing to my stupid. i.e.: everything that I am doing in terms of rehab could be in vain simply because of this silly little pill. however, if I reduce my dose, I will no longer be able to drive because of risk of seizures.
I do have a third option. there is a clinic here in town that studies only "epiliptology." they would take me inpatient, take me off my medication completely, cause seizures, and see where in my brain the seizures are happening. the purpose is to see if I am a candidate for what my neurologist called "surgical intervention," that is, removing the part of my brain where the seizures happen.
if I am not a good candidate for-- heh-- surgery, they would determine if there are better medicines out there for me.

They also had another lab where they studied side-effects of anti-seizure medication. They had a couple of tests set up which I went through as part of the control group, but I forgot most of them. The one that I remember was a little plate I had to stand on to test my balance and that recorded all my movements.

Umm, not that kind of plate. More like a small slab, maybe two by two feet or so.
