Page 20 soon to be made into digital form. (should get an LJ or something specifically for the comic..maybe)

My two cents on Watchmen below. Why? Because, uh, nothin' else going on. Possible spoilers (for the movie and the graphic novel), but nothing major.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

So, Watchmen. Now, I saw the movie when I was in the middle of re-reading the graphic novel, soo..could be I went in a little biased toward the comic. The depth, the general craft and storytelling, well, I was already telling myself "the movie's gonna suck."
The movie didn't suck, but I did have a general "it was okay" reaction to it. Who knows, may change if/when I ever see it on DVD (which happens to me sometimes. I'll like a movie in the theater, not so much watching at home, or vice versa, or somewhere in the middle).
Rorshach was probably my favorite part of the movie. I felt like they got his character generally pretty spot on and he was just fun to watch and listen to. Actually, everyone did a decent job. Sure, Laurie's a little more of a bitch in the comic, but eh..
Everyone, except for Ozymandias, IMHO. I don't know if he was miscast or what, but comparing movie version to comic version, he just didn't work as well as the others.
Also, the thing in the movie where Jon would touch Laurie to show her his perception of time...kinda silly when all she ever saw was just some flashbacks. I prefer the book's approach on that count.

The movie, visually, was definitely fun to watch, but then, for me, it was also missing the pathos of the book. I really didn't connect with any of the characters. Sure, I thought Rorshach was cool, but, I don't know..didn't feel it when he was turned into Rorshach bits. Definitely in contrast to when I reread it in the GN.
I feel like the fight scenes could've but cut down, time-wise to make room for more characterization and story, especially in the cases of Ozymandias and Dr. Manhattan (his monologue on Mars seemed sort of rushed to me).
Won't get into details concerning the differences in Ozzy's plan between movie and GN. I'm actually not sure either solution would work, long term without further manipulation on his part.
I will say this reread of Watchmen was only the second time I read it. First time was before 9/11. Seeing those splash pages in chapter twelve, and Laurie's reaction to the aftermath, and considering the disaster happened in NYC...it makes the book a different read now.

I'd like to think I didn't want the movie to match up with the book exactly, I just felt like the movie was mostly style with little substance, despite their taking dialogue and panel compositions straight from the GN. While Snyder's approach worked for 300, I don't think it really worked as well for Watchmen.

Being a more mature person and reader now though than when I first read it, the graphic novel is pretty amazing.

I've read Watchmen once, and I thought it was pretty great. I'm ready to read it again. But I usually have trouble making time to read anything. I bet I'd appreciate it even more the second time though.

I liked the movie. It was too violent, but it looked great. I thought it did about as well as it could have in capturing the graphic novel. Which is not very, but still.

Anyway, good job on the Love Gone Wrong CD mix. I liked it a lot.
