Probably good to wander around Greenwich Village a little bit and see what is going on. Major galleries are in Chelsea. You could go to Times Square and tick that off the list, then make your way over to Chelsea by heading west on 42nd street.
Go to the top of the Empire State Building. It has the classic view of Manhattan. It's kind of the New York version of going to the top of the Eiffel Tower.
I know many people who save a little money by staying in a hotel in Hoboken or Jersey City, New Jersey on the PATH train line. But, it's not really the full New York experience.
Start googling around. Feel free to ask me any questions. I live in the area, but spend more of my energy trying to get out of the city's gravity and heading into the country.
