Maybe it's because this is a US site, but reading my journals, I seem to vary in tone between a stammering Hugh Grant type or a cor blimey Dick Van Dyke type. I know when I visited the States, I was painfully aware of how posh and English. In an effort to blend in, I even pronounced tomato - tom-ay-to - nobody was fooled. Desperate.

So much for bringing democracy to the world. Tony Blair's party, Labour, are having their annual conference at present. Yesterday, foreign secretary Jack Straw was doing a speech extolling British policy re Iraq, when an 82-year-old man shouted 'Nonsense' or some such. The old guy was set upon by heavies in the hall and dragged out, and a younger man who remonstated with them was also forcibly evicted. Both were briefly detained under the Terrorism Act! Ludicrous. After bad press, they had to let him back.
