Does anyone who reads this stuff (no one, mostly) remember when I wrote: “I want to get back to blogging about serious issues; feminism, fashion, and fun. OK, mainly without fashion. But the other two certainly.” Well guess .what - YAY! Fashion! Thanks to Auntie¹ for the insight.
Tell me: Am I the only one not to have heard of Modest Fashion? Yes, I thought so. But I’ll tell anyway. Modest fashion is, as the Beeb puts it “all about covering up in a way that is still on trend.” This is popular in particular with young Muslims, but it’s not exclusive to them.
Asha Mohamud, who is a blogger and model, says "I feel like women are now dressing not to be sexy for men - but to feel sexy for themselves." Yay sister. OK, I’m personally really only into part of this – the two big dress items in modest fashion are trousers², and long skirts and dresses. Well I haven’t lived my entire life so far as a man just so that I can wear fucking trousers as a woman.
I wish I could post the pictures from the BBC article. They (the BBC, not the pictures) quote Shammie Hammouda pointing out that way back in 1950s Britain, modest fashion was the norm. True, but please, please let’s not go back there, even for the fashion. Shammie, BTW, runs a model agency, Umma Models, dedicated to models who only wear modest fashion.
