This is ludicrously simplified. It is also woefully incomplete, and also quite possibly wrong.
· Cisgender – used to describe people who are not transgender.
· Gender Confirmation Surgery (GCS) – see Sex Reassignment Surgery.
· Gender Dysphoria – a condition where a person experiences discomfort or distress because there is a mismatch between their biological sex and gender identity.
· Gender Expression – the external manifestation of gender, expressed through name, pronouns, appearance, etc.
· Gender Identity – a person's profoundly held sense of their own gender.
· Gender Identity Disorder (GID) – Like sex change, we don’t say this anymore - see Gender Dysphoria.
· Gender Incongruence – see Gender Dysphoria.
· Gender Non-Conforming – used to describe people whose gender expression is different from conventional expectations of masculinity and femininity.
· Genderqueer – see non-binary.
· Martini – a cocktail made from gin (or vodka) and dry vermouth, typically garnished with an olive or a twist of lemon.
· Non-binary – people whose gender identity and/or gender expression falls outside the categories of man and woman. Their gender may be defined as falling between man and woman, or in completely different terms.
· Sex – the classification, first usually made at birth, of a person as female or male.
· Sex change – do not use this term any more. Full stop.
· Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS) – surgery to aid in transition. Not all transgender people choose to do this.
· Sexual Orientation – someone’s physical, and/or emotional attraction to another person.
· Trans – a shorthand used to mean transgender or transsexual - or sometimes to be inclusive of a wide variety of identities under the term transgender. This term is imprecise and should be used with care.
· Transbian – a woman who is both transgender and lesbian, or rarely, a woman who is transgender and is sexually attracted to transgender women.
· Transgender – a generic term for people whose gender identity and/or gender expression differs from what is typically associated with the sex they were assigned at birth.
· Transition – the process of altering one's sex. This is a complex process that will differ for different individuals. It is not easy, and where you live can make a huge difference. The steps can include; changing legal documents, changing names and pronouns, changing dress, hormone therapy and sometimes surgery.
· Transsexual – a specific (somewhat outdated) term usually used by people who have permanently changed or are changing their bodies through SRS. Many transgender people (such as me) do not identify as transsexual and prefer the word transgender.
