Mom's been feeling a little melancholy lately and I thought to myself, "Why not attempt my first homemade pie and bring it over for Sunday dinner?" She loves blueberry and the produce stand by my house had them on sale. So armed with both the America's Test Kitchen and Alton Brown's recipes, I embarked on this culinary adventure. It came out great. Golden brown and delicious looking...Tasted great until I started biting into these hard chewy things. I had been using 3 pints of fresh blueberries and had reduced half of those in a saucepan after giving them a little mash, so that the pectin they released would help thicken the pie. I got distracted a bit and they started to stick to the bottom of the pan. So, off heat, I decided I need to add something to slow down the cooking process but not increase the moisture. Opened up Mom's freezer and saw a bag of, what I thought were Trader Joe's frozen blueberries. It turns out they were black beans! Didn't realize until after I almost finished a piece. My mom laughed so hard, I think she peed a little...
