Very rough draft - let me know what you think
Night Light
There so many stars
Some where dark and some where light
I wished upon them
As did those to my left and those to my right
Is not darkness, only the absence of light
I feared nothing during those year
I find myself near forty
Afraid of the dark
Heavens were filled with the fiery souls
The wicked and wild
Who had fought and served their country
Ended up in a place they expected never
The old ones are five years
Away from becoming an antique
Not much older than a nicely aged Single Malt
Still they are to young to yet taste
Still it shall pass their dirty peach fuzzed lips
Whiskey and woman
Wine and song
None of them will ever truly see home again
Some give all
All gave some
Not to return to a paraded
Or the Fife and drum
For God and for country
Their hearts burn an indelible flame
Giving me the will to fight
Their souls are my Night light
