Autism children and relationships...

Any parents out there for special needs children? I have 3 kids and my middle son is autistic (low end of the spectrum) and bipolar. I'm newly single after 16 years of marriage. One of the reasons my ex wife cited for her leaving is our son.

I've been dating a great woman for about 6 months now and last night (Fathers Dau mind you) she bore witness to her 1st autistic meltdown and it was a fairly mild meltdown comparatively.

Prior to this we had been talking about the possibility of marriage. She said I was the 1st person she's really loved, etc. She got a little freaked and was worried about the future which of course worried me.

I guess I just need to know. Are there any successful relationships/marriages with special needs children out there or is it my kids and me against the world? I understand where she's coming from. I know better than anyone how impossible it feels sometimes.

I can't post this on Facebook or anything because then family/friends will judge her.

Any advice?

It's rough. I'm a former special Ed teacher, and I saw a lot of marriages end. This is probably just from what I've seen personally, but sometimes blended families can work a little better. Mostly because the new partner KNOWS what they are getting into. I know it's rough, but by preparing her, letting her know what to expect and how she could help you are really important. Hoping the best for you and your family 💜

Thank you very much @amberx. That does give me hope. I have so much respect for you as a special Ed teacher. I'm a high school teacher and have volunteered in my son's class so I know a bit about the struggle. I hope this relationship doesn't end but my son will always be with me so if she can't hang I guess it's better to know now.
