Well, i just entered my novel manuscript into the Australian/Vogel Literary Award. I'll find out sometime in September if it got anywhere.
This is the synopsis I wrote for it:
'Suicide Butterflies' is a story of love, loss and betrayal, of lies and lost memories. It follows two young women who meet as inpatients in a psychiatric hospital, and are drawn together by a connection that neither of them is consciously aware of.
Alice is an introverted girl in her twenties who comes from a small country town. She is dealing with the loss of her younger sister and is plagued with guilt, believing she could have saved her life if only she had tried.
Emily is a privileged teenager from a wealthy family in the city who had been living a life dominated by promiscuous sex, excessive amounts of drugs, and an obsession with a girl who did not love her back. She cannot remember what she did to be admitted to the hospital, knowing only that she was found covered in someone else's blood.
They take refuge in each other's company, and conspire to get themselves released from the hospital. When their plan succeeds, they move to Brisbane together, and Emily introduces Alice to the clubbing and drugs lifestyle.
But as before, Emily finds herself falling deeper into the addiction, and searching for an easy way to earn drug money, all the while trying to hide this from Alice. She is plagued with fragments of memory from the day before she was admitted to hospital, and tries to slowly piece together what may have happened. She also tries to deny the fact that she is becoming increasingly attracted to Alice.
Alice, meanwhile, is determined to find out what caused her sister to commit suicide. She makes no secret of the fact that she wants Emily, and will do almost anything in her attempt to make Emily love her back.
As their infatuation deepens into an intense, confusing relationship, pieces of their pasts begin to fall into place to eventually reveal a dark secret which ultimately threatens to destroy them both.
sooo... fingers crossed
