So word came down last night that my peers and I will be making microcosmic history in a few weeks. See, I play Roller Derby. My girl and I founded Pioneer Valley Roller Derby about 9 months ago. We have a men's division as well as a women's division.

This doesn't seem like a big deal but it is amongst a very small segment of society. My tendency to drone on wants me to write an essay about the politics of Roller Derby, but I will resist. Suffice it to say, we are the first organization in the new school to have a men's team. I am the first male skater to have a registered derby name. Many people support us, many more hate us.

On Sunday, September 17th, our men's team will travel from Western Massachusetts to Baltimore to play an exhibition scrimmage against a group of referees from the Charm City Rollers as a halftime show during their women's championship bout. It will be the first men's bout in the revival era of Roller Derby.

We are not ready, we don't have enough guys, half of us can't get the time off from work and we don't even have uniforms yet, but we will go and skate.

It doesn't seem like a big deal, but it is pretty huge for a small handful of folks.
