I know most of you guys are not local in San Diego, but I wanted to share some resources I've been using/sharing to contact my local reps about police oversight and accountability. I hope this is useful to those who are local, and gives those who are not ideas for how to contact their own reps. With the links below and email template, contacting my rep to advocate for change took less than five minutes.
San Diego friends:
If you would like to take action for police accountability in our city:
The San Diego City Council will have a proposal before them in the next few days concerning independent police oversight. The proposal seeks to create a community led commission that would independently investigate police misconduct.
A 2019 report commissioned by the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties showed that, while the SDPD was found to use force at a higher rate than 93% of other California law enforcement agencies, fewer than 1% of allegations of excessive force or discrimination were upheld. You can read the entirety of this report here -HTTPS://POLICESCORECARD.ORG/ASSETS/SAN-DIEGO/POLICE-SCORECARD-SAN-DIEGO-REPORT.PDF
Please contact your city council representative via email (find your council district and your rep's email here - SANDIEGO.GOV/CITYCOUNCIL ) or submit a public comment here - SANDIEGO.GOV/BOARDS-AND-COMMISSIONS/PUBLIC-COMMENT .
Since coming up with words is hard, here's a copy of the email I sent:
"Hi ____,
I'm a resident of San Diego Council District #, in the _______ area. I am emailing to express my support of the proposed November ballot measure to create an Independent Police Practices Commission. I echo Council President Georgette Gómez's call for unanimous vote on this critical reform.
Thank you,
Name
Phone number
Address"
As an additional resource, it looks like this will be discussed at a meeting later this month on the 23rd. CBS8.COM/ARTICLE/NEWS/LOCAL/POLICE-OVERSIGHT-SAN-DIEGO-CITY-COUNCIL/509-99BE694D-E84F-4863-A326-6294EC76DCA6
Black lives matter y'all.
