Before a decisive battle, the Japanese general decided to take the initiative and attack, knowing that the enemy was greater in number. Although he was sure of his strategy, his men were fearful.
On the way to the confrontation, they decided to stop at a temple. After praying, the general turned to his soldiers:
- I will toss this coin. If it is heads, we...

Who still wants this bill?
Cassan Said Amer tells a story about a lecturer who began a seminar holding up a 20 dollar bill, and asking:
- Who wants this 20 dollar bill?
Several hands went up, but the lecturer said:
- Before handing it over, there's something I must do.
He furiously crushed it, and asked again:
- Who still wants this bill?
The...

stories of friends and strangers
by Paolo Coelho

C. Martins comes over to serve our table in a caf in San Diego, California. I met Cludia in Brazil four years ago, and I tell my friends about the life she leads in the United States, getting only three hours sleep a day, working at the caf until late at night and then as a baby-sitter...

The soldier in the forest

Climbing up a track in the Pyrenees in search of somewhere to practice archery, I came upon a small French army camp. The soldiers looked at me, I pretended that I could see nothing (we all have a little of this paranoia of being seen as spies ...) and carried on my way.
I found the ideal spot, performed my...

sir, you are in the journal run, yes?
please, oh god please, say yes....

as for the "child like" questions... i tend to go through that almost everyday, i design packaging for the kids market, (ie toys, candy, food, entertainment) so I end up having to think like a kid quite a bit... and get paid for it...even better!

masterless samurai huh? as in a ronin?

you notice the look on people's faces when you wish them a merry christmas?

some smile...others seem shocked...others get offended...those who get offended are the ones that suprise me...although i understand where they are coming from...

ever since 9/11 we have gone from patriotism and friendship, to mistrust and suspicion...especially in the realm of religion...
it has almost become a crime to say you are...

season greetings to all,

this year has been a tumultuous one to say the least...

not just in my life, but in all of our lives...
we have family members and friends far away from us...some have passed away, some we no longer talk...

there is a thing called the warrior of the light that i sort of buy into...I wouldn't call myself a religious man, but neither am i an atheist...every once in a while i come across a passage that seems to fit my state of mind...and these passages just seem to sum up something good, something poignant, something i either feel, or wish to emulate...
I...

at five a.m. today i recieved a message on my voice mail which i didn't listen to until eight this morning.

I thought nothing of it...so i listened, never in my life expecting what was to be played back...

the connection seemed like it was being coming from a closed room, because i heard the distinct sound of an echo in the background...
and as...

do you have caller ID?
where did it say the call was from?
ndoki:
that's the thing that makes this story so strange...
i have a pager now...i had gotten rid of my cellphone quite a bit ago...so only three people have my number now...
any friends that could have known about my aunt i have long since lost touch with...
being as devotely catholic as my family is, neither is it something they would joke about.
The connection of the call was pretty bad, the kind i always run into calling Ecuador (my birth country ) from here: echoee, as if it was in some closed cold room, and that unmistakeable delay between each sentence of someone speaking...and pausing, waiting for a reply...

i have no explanation other than it was my aunt...

the paragraph reads as a quote by the actual person who sent me this via a regular newsletter that i am subscribed to, i invite everyone to take a look and give me your feedback:

"Many centuries ago, in the days of the samurais, a text was written in Japan on the spiritual art of wielding the sword: "Impassive comprehension", also known as "The Treatise...

today i helped a complete stranger,
it is funny how something so simple can derive such satisfaction...without any promise of reward...
not that i look for such things...
But i thought about this today...
what of those parents looking for lost children who appear on tv...
they plead that the people help them...and they say, in return...they offer a reward...
it's sad that we believe...
