Do What Thou Wilt: Kenneth Anger On Aleister Crowley & The Occult
Kenneth Anger, avant-garde filmmaker and author of the infamous two volume filmland scandal compilation "Hollywood Babylon," discussed The Wickedest Man In The World, Aleister Crowley at the UCLA Hammer Museum. Also known as "The Great Beast," Crowley, a British occultist, hedonist, and author, inspired a fanatical following in the early 20th century through his poetry, novels and studies of magic. Anger screened two of his own short films which exclusively (and somewhat obsessively) featured Crowley's oils and water colors, the lens crawling all over their swirling densely colored surfaces. See below for one such painting.

The best part was seeing Anger take the stage, clad in an oversize "Lucifer" hockey jersey and bright orange pants, to champion letter writing over e-mailing and mourn the death of his former patron J. Paul Getty. He's one hell of an entertainer!

My boyfriend had brought along a first edition of "Hollywood Babylon II" for the author to autograph, so, after the films, along with the ever-wired Howie Pyro, we hung out in front of the stage waiting for the controversial Mr. A to re-emerge. When he did so, Pyro tried to get him to autograph his arm so Howie could add yet another tattoo to his already-illustrated limb. Kenneth refused, signed my boyfriend's book and, happily, agreed to sit for me. I'm looking forward to photographing this infamous filmmaker!
